About a Guy: Foster Huntington

Posted in Art, Fashion, Photography, Urban Outfitters by KW on 27/10/2011

Foster is another person where I feel like I’ll probably someday be saying ‘I knew him when,’ and I might already be saying that now. Several years ago, I posted about his blog, and he emailed to say thanks. We kept in touch, and eventually profiled him for a project on interns. Then he started a couple of really awesome blogs, got a book deal, and ditched his job in NYC to live the dream and travel the country in a van that is only occasionally parked down by the river.

Employee of the Month: Anouck Bertin

Posted in Art, Fashion, Photography, Urban Outfitters by KW on 27/10/2011

Employee of the Month profiles are an idea that I implemented when I started working on the UO blog. There are so many insanely talented people at Urban Outfitters—lots of people who kick-ass at their day job and then go home to work on equally as intense personal projects.  The features purposefully focus on what people  do outside of work to help give them some shine. Anouck is definitely one of the best of the bunch. (FYI, I produced and edited this feature, but the actual interview was done by someone else.)

WTVR

Posted in Art, Fashion, Urban Outfitters by KW on 27/08/2011

WTVR is the new quarterly, in-store zine that Urban Outfitters is publishing. For this issue #3, I commissioned the lovely and amazing Hazel Cills to write a first-person essay about the hilarious horrors of being a wanna-be art student. Hazel is the best 17-year-old friend that a 31-year-old editor could ever hope to have. I love working with her.

Scott Ross and I spent a summer of Wednesdays hanging out in Fort Greene to make this video with students from Pratt Institute.

UO Shoots: Jeff Luker

Posted in Art, Fashion, Photography, Urban Outfitters by KW on 27/02/2011

I got to know Jeff Luker because he would always submit photos to the Urban Outfitters Flickr pool, and then send nice little emails whenever his work  was in a show or a zine. Eventually, we asked him to do a shoot for us. We sent him a couple of boxes of clothes, and that was it—no direction, no models, no stylists. It’s always a risk when you do this, but Jeff’s shoot (here) went above and beyond our expectations, and perfectly captured the vibe of UO. And, FYI, he’s now shooting Levi’s campaigns. NBD. We knew him when.

Like Feeding Cats

An interview with Hedi Slimane for Monster Children magazine. I hate email interviews and tend to protest when people ask for them, but for some people, I feel it’s ok to make an exception. Like for him.

The Working Man

Posted in Art, Design, Monster Children by KW on 08/02/2010

This interview with Dmote, an Australian graffiti writer and RVCA art director, is one of my favorite pieces. He’s just a regular dude, so when writing about him, I felt a much bigger sense of responsibility than I get when writing about celebrities.

Get Smart

This is an essay, for Nylon, about celebrating nerdy fashion, which ran in the music issue. It was pretty much inspired by Kanye West’s glasses.

A Secret About a Secret

Posted in Art, Monster Children, New York, Photography by KW on 09/11/2009

An interview with photographers and friends Patrick O’Dell and Angela Boatwright in Monster Children. Photography seems to be one of the simplest art forms, but it’s also one of the hardest to understand. What makes one photo good and one bad? Doing this interview helped me answer that.
