About a Guy: Foster Huntington

Posted in Art, Fashion, Photography, Urban Outfitters by KW on 27/10/2011

Foster is another person where I feel like I’ll probably someday be saying ‘I knew him when,’ and I might already be saying that now. Several years ago, I posted about his blog, and he emailed to say thanks. We kept in touch, and eventually profiled him for a project on interns. Then he started a couple of really awesome blogs, got a book deal, and ditched his job in NYC to live the dream and travel the country in a van that is only occasionally parked down by the river.

Employee of the Month: Anouck Bertin

Posted in Art, Fashion, Photography, Urban Outfitters by KW on 27/10/2011

Employee of the Month profiles are an idea that I implemented when I started working on the UO blog. There are so many insanely talented people at Urban Outfitters—lots of people who kick-ass at their day job and then go home to work on equally as intense personal projects.  The features purposefully focus on what people  do outside of work to help give them some shine. Anouck is definitely one of the best of the bunch. (FYI, I produced and edited this feature, but the actual interview was done by someone else.)

Nikki Lane

Posted in Beauty, Fashion, Music, Urban Outfitters by KW on 27/10/2011

This was one of my favorite projects that we’ve done all year. I’m a big fan of Nikki Lane because I think her music sounds really fresh and natural, and she’s got a great personality that really came across in this interview. For this feature, I interviewed Nikki, and produced the photo shoot.

Inside: Baggu

Posted in Design, Fashion, New York, Urban Outfitters by KW on 27/10/2011

I love Baggu bags, and so does everyone else—in Brooklyn, walk down the street and you’ll see Baggu totes and backpacks everywhere. For this project, we paid a visit to their Williamsburg studio and found that the staff was just as fun and stylish as the bags. After this went live, Emily sent me a note and said no one had ever captured their vibe so perfectly. Big smile.

WTVR

Posted in Art, Fashion, Urban Outfitters by KW on 27/08/2011

WTVR is the new quarterly, in-store zine that Urban Outfitters is publishing. For this issue #3, I commissioned the lovely and amazing Hazel Cills to write a first-person essay about the hilarious horrors of being a wanna-be art student. Hazel is the best 17-year-old friend that a 31-year-old editor could ever hope to have. I love working with her.

Scott Ross and I spent a summer of Wednesdays hanging out in Fort Greene to make this video with students from Pratt Institute.

Closet Project: Rachel Ballinger

Posted in Fashion, Urban Outfitters by KW on 27/04/2011

Rachel is one of the man UO models who also have amazing personal style. I wanted to do this project with her after seeing her in the cafeteria wearing Chucks and a pair of sequined pants.

A video introducing the designers behind several of Urban Outfitters’ Designed By: collaborations.

UO Shoots: Jeff Luker

Posted in Art, Fashion, Photography, Urban Outfitters by KW on 27/02/2011

I got to know Jeff Luker because he would always submit photos to the Urban Outfitters Flickr pool, and then send nice little emails whenever his work  was in a show or a zine. Eventually, we asked him to do a shoot for us. We sent him a couple of boxes of clothes, and that was it—no direction, no models, no stylists. It’s always a risk when you do this, but Jeff’s shoot (here) went above and beyond our expectations, and perfectly captured the vibe of UO. And, FYI, he’s now shooting Levi’s campaigns. NBD. We knew him when.

The opportunity for mom jokes are endless when you ask people to submit photos of their hot moms. That’s my momma. See the other submissions, and read an interview with Piper Weiss, the creator of the blog My Mom, The Style Icon. You can also see that both of my parents commented on this.

Girls Gone Wilder

Cowboys. Cowgirls. Country music and denim-on-denim. A story about Western style for Russh magazine.

Like Feeding Cats

Posted in Art, Design, Fashion, Monster Children, Photography by KW on 22/02/2010

An interview with Hedi Slimane for Monster Children magazine. I hate email interviews and tend to protest when people ask for them, but for some people, I feel it’s ok to make an exception. Like for him.

UO Interviews: Karen O.

Posted in Fashion, Music, Urban Outfitters by KW on 29/01/2010

A lot of times, when you interview someone, you’re scheduled in for 15 minutes, and you’re one of 20 interviews they’ve done that day. I figured if I was sick of asking boring questions, Karen was sick of answering them. This was really fun.

Get Smart

This is an essay, for Nylon, about celebrating nerdy fashion, which ran in the music issue. It was pretty much inspired by Kanye West’s glasses.

Open Season

Posted in Celebrity, Fashion, Nylon by KW on 14/01/2010

A cover story on Rachel Bilson for the March 2008 issue of Nylon. I loved writing for Nylon because you didn’t have to censor anything, and this story pretty much lays out my interaction with Rachel Bilson exactly as it happened.

The Artist’s Way

Posted in Beauty, Fashion, Nylon by KW on 14/01/2010

An elegy for makeup artist Shu Uemura, published in the April 2008 issue of Nylon. I started my career in beauty, and a good set of false eyelashes still makes my heart beat faster.

Love Nest

Posted in Design, Fashion, Nylon by KW on 14/01/2010

A visit to the Sydney apartment of Susien Chong and Nic Briand, the design duo behind Lover. Susien and Nic are great, but Potato stole my heart. I think about her often.
