About a Guy: Foster Huntington
Foster is another person where I feel like I’ll probably someday be saying ‘I knew him when,’ and I might already be saying that now. Several years ago, I posted about his blog, and he emailed to say thanks. We kept in touch, and eventually profiled him for a project on interns. Then he started a couple of really awesome blogs, got a book deal, and ditched his job in NYC to live the dream and travel the country in a van that is only occasionally parked down by the river.
Employee of the Month: Anouck Bertin
Employee of the Month profiles are an idea that I implemented when I started working on the UO blog. There are so many insanely talented people at Urban Outfitters—lots of people who kick-ass at their day job and then go home to work on equally as intense personal projects. The features purposefully focus on what people do outside of work to help give them some shine. Anouck is definitely one of the best of the bunch. (FYI, I produced and edited this feature, but the actual interview was done by someone else.)
Nikki Lane
This was one of my favorite projects that we’ve done all year. I’m a big fan of Nikki Lane because I think her music sounds really fresh and natural, and she’s got a great personality that really came across in this interview. For this feature, I interviewed Nikki, and produced the photo shoot.
Inside: Baggu
I love Baggu bags, and so does everyone else—in Brooklyn, walk down the street and you’ll see Baggu totes and backpacks everywhere. For this project, we paid a visit to their Williamsburg studio and found that the staff was just as fun and stylish as the bags. After this went live, Emily sent me a note and said no one had ever captured their vibe so perfectly. Big smile.
WTVR
WTVR is the new quarterly, in-store zine that Urban Outfitters is publishing. For this issue #3, I commissioned the lovely and amazing Hazel Cills to write a first-person essay about the hilarious horrors of being a wanna-be art student. Hazel is the best 17-year-old friend that a 31-year-old editor could ever hope to have. I love working with her.
Designed By: Pratt Institute
Scott Ross and I spent a summer of Wednesdays hanging out in Fort Greene to make this video with students from Pratt Institute.
Closet Project: Rachel Ballinger
Rachel is one of the man UO models who also have amazing personal style. I wanted to do this project with her after seeing her in the cafeteria wearing Chucks and a pair of sequined pants.

UO Shoots: Jeff Luker
I got to know Jeff Luker because he would always submit photos to the Urban Outfitters Flickr pool, and then send nice little emails whenever his work was in a show or a zine. Eventually, we asked him to do a shoot for us. We sent him a couple of boxes of clothes, and that was it—no direction, no models, no stylists. It’s always a risk when you do this, but Jeff’s shoot (here) went above and beyond our expectations, and perfectly captured the vibe of UO. And, FYI, he’s now shooting Levi’s campaigns. NBD. We knew him when.
