Nikki Lane
This was one of my favorite projects that we’ve done all year. I’m a big fan of Nikki Lane because I think her music sounds really fresh and natural, and she’s got a great personality that really came across in this interview. For this feature, I interviewed Nikki, and produced the photo shoot.
About A Girl: Lisa Howard
I didn’t write this feature, but served as producer after I met Lisa Howard in Austin, Texas, when she was touring with Diamond Rings. John, aka Diamond Rings, is actually Lisa’s cousin, and they’ve been collaborating since they were kids. She’s now a makeup artist, and creates all of his looks for his videos, photo-shoots and live-shows. This feature corresponded with a big beauty month for UO, and I was psyched to find a makeup artist who was down-to-earth, creative and totally in line with our customer.
Diamond Rings at Urban Outfitters
I love Diamond Rings, and he’s made several of my all time favorite music videos. We had a really good time filming this, and full-disclosure: Our videographer didn’t have a sound guy, so I was filling in. After an awesome interview, we discovered that I actually hadn’t recorded a word of it. Oops. I think it’s a testament to how awesome Diamond Rings is that he did it all again, and with the same level of enthusiasm. This is take two!
The Givers at Urban Outfitters in Austin
During SXSW, Urban Outfitters has four days of free shows. Our videographer, Scott, and I wanted to do some interviews, but wanted to stay far away from the standard boring questions that everyone asks bands. For inspiration, we took a trip to the toy aisles at Target and came away with a few props. Givers were more than happy to see what they could summon with our Ouija board (nothing, as it turns out).
Mellowhype in Wooooo
I interviewed Odd Future’s Mellowhype for Wooooo. It was a pretty funny interview. Unintentionally. And yes, that is a pink James Franco on the cover.
Beach House
Beach House’s Devotion was the soundtrack for 2010. Even though I didn’t own the album until November, it seemed like it was playing everywhere I went. It was Urban Outfitters’s No. 1 album of the year, and I really enjoyed talking to Victoria Legrand. She speaks in complete sentences, and it was one of those interviews that doesn’t even really need to be edited.
